Garamond is Michelangelo's David to the type world. It is a timeless masterpiece created by a classical craftsman and to this day is a cherished piece of history. Even in today's digital forms, Garamond evokes the hand.
It puckers and bloats in delicate ways like ink swelling within paper fibers. The last book I read was a hardback novel about the story of an estranged Sri Lankan family with plenty of drama and emotional upheaval. It was the kind of book you start and have to read through without putting it down.
At the end of the book there was a little footnote saying how and why the author had chosen to print the book with the Garamond typeface.
The famous D. Stempel AG interpretation from the s remains true to the original Garamond types with its typical old style characteristics. The bold italic weight is a modern addition at the end of the s, and the small caps provided an alternative to the standard capital letters.
